It’s hard to believe the Chrisette Michele has been on the music scene for 10 years. In order to commemorate her industry journey, she released Milestone, the apropos title to her first offering from her independent Rich Hipster label. I still remember the first time I heard her pitch perfect voice- with almost buttery perfection on the hook of Jay-Z’s Lost One… my initial reaction was who IS this girl and I’ve been a fan of hers ever since. Although most of us fell in love with Chrisette because of her voice, our love affair with her continued because of her unique and undeniable beauty and constant source of style inspiration. If nothing else, Michele has proven that she does not fit into any box- constantly switching up her look from R&B vixen, to blonde-bombshell naturalista; rocking each look effortlessly.
I had a chance to sit down with Michele at the Essence Fest during the eve of the kick off of her Milestone tour. Chrisette is obviously a curvy girl and she embraces her curves with pitch perfect precision. She mentioned that she was wearing one of my favorite designers- Jibrionline during her entire time in N’awlins.
I also was curious about Rich Hipster the name of her label and a movement unto itself in social media. Michele indicated that Rich Hipster evolved organically as a result of her own love of social media and she lists fellow Ebony Magazine- cover girl- Gabi Fresh as one of her favorites to watch on the innernets. When I wondered about who inspires her she indicated that musically her inspirations change- alternating from Ella Fitzgerald to Art Blakey.
