Searching for "edge control"

Edge Control For The Win

It’s August and though fall is on the horizon this is the hottest month of the year; if you’re natural like me than you know the struggle the humidity can have on your hair. I have quite honestly given up on rocking my ‘fro as I’m not partial to truly looking like Frederick Douglas. Instead, I’ve opted to wear protective styling in the form of a weave with a tiny bit of leave out in the front.  Leave out aside, my edges are what really seem to forsake me in this August heat. I will leave the sanctity of my bathroom with edges that are laid and well-behaved only to step into the elements to have my edges yell girl bye.   As a result I have diligently been on the hunt for products that will truly tame my edges.

I feel truly blessed to have a circle of friends who are experts in hair care so I asked them for a bit of advice and recommendations on their favorite products:

India and Mica of I McCleod Salon  both recommend Influance Glazed edges and indicated its good for both relaxed and natural clients.  According to India, some of the benefits include that it doesn’t turn white (as some edge control products do) and tends to last a little longer.

Cataanda J recommends Hicks Transformation edges and simply put, called it a miracle worker.

Hicks Transformations can be found at Walmart and retails for $12.99

I personally have had a fair amount of success with Carols Daughter Black Vanilla and edge smoother.  There is very little residue and flakiness which can be characteristic of other products. It also does a great job of keeping my edges smooth even in the August heat.  Edge control can be a blessing and a curse.   Even some of the best products can build up with too much use, so it will be critical to ensure you are shampooing the product out followed by a good conditioner.

Style Item of the Week- Organic Root Stimulator Edge Control

Because I am newly natural, I am ALWAYS on the hunt for products to tame my tresses to perfection.  I am a huge fan of protective styling in the form of a weave and my favorite style in  between weaves is a simple topknot, which is no easy feat for me.

This is where my absolute new favorite product for edge control steps in-Organic root simulator- edge control. This product offers the perfect way to ‘lay’ down my edges, which can be a challenge for my natural hair.   I will caution you to use it sparingly, preferably on clean hair as it does leave a bit of residue if over-applied- otherwise, I adore it!

Have you come across any products that help achieve sleek looks with natural hair?  Then PLEASE share!

NYFW-Backstage with Design Essentials At Harlem Fashion Row

Halo braids

Halo braids

Design Essentials served as the official hair sponsor for Harlem Fashion Row. Keith Campbell returned as Lead stylist for the show and he created looks from highly textured, voluminous pompadours to halo braids and textured Afros.

Though each designer had individual styles that served as the hair inspiration for their respective collections Design Essentials provided products from both their natural line and the professional salon range.

The pompadour created for Byron Lars was a huge favorite both backstage and among the fashionistas attending the show.

Big Easy Style Lounge: Design Essentials

The sound of jazz can be heard on almost every block once you hit the Quarter in N’awlins; during the 20th anniversary of the Essence Musical Festival that music was rounded out with the soulful or funkdafied sounds of just about every other genre of music that speaks to your soul.

The Superdome was the place to be in the evenings and during the day I had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a few brands that I’ve come to know and love. Design Essentials hosted an event featuring the Grammy nominated Ledisi who played host to their inaugural Big Easy Style Lounge. Guests were treated to massages, makeup application and had the opportunity to chat with professionals about the range of products and which specific combination worked best for individual needs.

Because I’m a naturalista currently wearing a weave (with some leave out) the sleek edge control was recommended as well as the hydrience which serves as both heat protectant and moisturizer.
