When Life Gives You Curves- You Rock Them-Curves Rock Weekend Recap

This weekend the Hyatt Hotel played host to the third annual Curves Rock Weekend. The weekend kicked off with a runway competition hosted at Oxygen Lounge and continued with a mix of panel discussions, a sample sale and a showcase of emerging designers. The highlight of the weekend is always the runway show which featured a mix of designers for the traditionally under served curvy girl.
One of my new local favorites who I initially discovered via Instagram @Mimidre of Fly Nerd was featured both as an emerging designer and in Saturday evenings runway show.

Tionna Smalls returned with her own brand of curvy, plus-positive humor keeping the attendees not only laughing but continuously reminding everyone about just how awesome it is to be curvy.

Ms. Maryland Plus delighted us with her talents and personally brought me to tears with her spoken word which was equal parts poignant, impactful and encouraging.

Curves Rock Weekend- Runway Recap

If you haven’t had the pleasure of spending any amount of time watching Tionna Smalls of MTV fame – truly get to know her. Smalls was one of the delightful hosts of Curves Rock Weekend which is the premier full figured fashion week for the Baltimore/DC metro area. Hosting duties were shared by Baltimore’s own super-model Liris Crosse who also serves as one of the business partners behind the weekend.

Curves Rock consisted of a host of seminars with a focus on empowering women; however the marquee event was the runway show which featured eight designers and a bevy of some of the most gorgeous plus-sized models I’ve ever laid eyes on. The brain child of former models- Tykesha “Ms Diva Doll” Reed and Chanell “Stallion N’ Stilettos” Jones this was only the second year for an event that bought women from as far away as San Diego.

Here are some of the highlights from the show which included designs from Torrid, Ashley Stewart, Anne Kaufman, Marco Hall and Shanda Freeman.

The vendors were another highlight for the weekend and one my hands down favorites was www.thicknesstees.com which celebrate the thickness of curvy women.

Curvy on the Carpet- Oscars Recap

The Oscars took place last night  and with the exception of a few highlights the show was a huge bore; In fact, I actually fell asleep in spite of my attempts to stay awake in order to see Adele perform what I now know is her Oscar winning song Skyfall.

Much will be written about how amazing Charlize Theron looked in Dior ( my best-dressed for the evening) or how Halle simply slayed in custom Versace- however, I wanted to show some love to the curvy girls who graced the red carpet last night.

If you have not figured it out by now, I’m a curvy girl who is constantly learning to embrace the figure God blessed me with- I applaud women in Hollywood who quite frankly are “average” sized but definitively find themselves in the  plus- sized category based on Hollywood ‘s standards. Here’s my Oscar rundown:

Octavia Spencer remained loyal to Tadashi Shoji in a nude-peach chiffon gown by the designer. I was not a fan of her look at all and after the actress recently  lost 20 pounds, I would have been happy to see her in something that highlighted her newly slimmed down figure; instead she wound up looking quite matronly in a dress that would have been perfect for the mother of the bride.

Melissa McCarthy
Let me start by saying I love this woman- she has pitch-perfect comedic timing and is currently starring in one of the top box office hits-Identity Theft. Unfortunately she entrusted her red carpet look to someone who simply has no clue how to dress a fuller figured woman. Everything about last nights look was wrong- from the ill-fitting gown to hair that reminded me of the old school cast of Dallas.85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Queen Latifah
I only happened to  catch a glimpse of Lah on the carpet but let me tell you, she always looks amazing- she was resplendent in Bagdley Mischka and everything from her elegant pony tail to her flawless make up was completely swoon-worthy.

Adele is my new girl crush and she was hands down my favorite on the red carpet last night- although I would have loved to have seen her in something other than her staple black she looked incredibly gorgeous in Jenny Packham. Part of the reason I loved her look is because she chose something that accentuated her assets and minimized any flaws.

The Curvy Revolution

I’m not sure if you have noticed it or not, but curvy girls absolutely rock.  From a week dedicated to all things fashionable and curvy-fab- (Full Figured Fashion Week) to Plus Model Magazine doing amazing editorial fashion work for curvy girls, the revolution is in full effect.  I place myself firmly in the category of a curvy girl, and trust me when I tell you the love affair of my curves has not always been as strong as it is now.   But alas, style is not a size it’s about an innate ability to know what looks good on you and being able to stylishly flaunt what God gave you.  Well, I figured it was time to put together a look book of some of my favorite styles for US.

Take a look, chime in and most importantly proudly flaunt every luscious curve.

Plus Model Magazine Blogger Conference Recap

As New York Fashion Week came to a close last week, Plus Model Magazine hosted  a  blogger conference in order to  introduce Mynt 1792; a new plus friendly clothing line that recognizes just how much “luxury-sized” women like to show off their assets. The collection featured embellished denim, fur vests and brightly-hued motorcycle leather jackets.  The bloggers in attendance were practically giddy with excitement because the  line recognizes curvy women are not afraid of rich and vibrant colors- like the bright Kelly green and fire engine red motorcycle  jackets paired with skinny jeans featured in the collection.  I was particularly fond of the gold slim fitting jeans as they offer a perfect option for the upcoming holiday season when you want to be festive and stand out in something other than the typical cocktail dress.  Mynt 1792 uses fit models that are a size 18 and they recognize that not all curvy girls have an hourglass shape and as a result the collection offers something for everyone.

Mynt 1792 will be available on their website as well as Nordstrom.com in October.
Check out a video of the collection here

Lane Bryant Launches New Comprehensive Campaign

Many a fashionista is excited to visit their mailboxes eagerly anticipating the arrival of the coveted September issues of their favorite magazines.   With the September issues come new products, a focus on the latest trends and of course advertising and brands all vying for your attention.  I for one am a huge fan of Essence Magazine and I was pleasantly surprised to get a first hand glimpse of the comprehensive re-branding of one of my favorite curvy girl shopping destinations-Lane Bryant.  The premier plus sized retailer has been around for over 110 years and this fall marks the first overhaul of the companies advertising and branding since 2008.

The new campaign features a sleek logo and merges lifestyle and personal imagery with the fashion images captured by photographer Alexi Lubomirski. The tagline for the new campaign resonates “FASHION FOR EVERYDAY, STYLE JUST FOR YOU“.

Here’s a preview of the new Lane Bryant campaign.  I for one am LOVING the leopard!

Have You Found Your Plus Sexy? Qristyl Frazier Show Review

Let me begin this post by saying that Qristyl Frazier is hands down one of my favorite curvy girl designers.  When I celebrated my birthday in January, I immediately looked to Qristyl’s website in hopes of finding something that would enhance my curves. When my dress arrived it was nothing short of amazing. Because I have been a huge fan of her work since her Project Runway days I was honored to receive an invite to her show at Julisa’s Bar and Lounge. I decided to make a day of my trip to NYC and invited some of my curvy fashionista friends along to do some shopping and of course see the show.

When we arrived at Julisa’s the air was electric with excitement and anticipation as the curvy, fab and fly waited for the show to begin. As soon as the first model hit the runway, everyone nodded their heads in a universal agreement that she gets us-and her pieces were proof positive that Qristyl understands the fashion needs of the plus-sized woman. With Frazier’s newest collection a size 12 or above is no longer the forgotten woman. There were no tents or ill-fitting pieces to be found-instead her collection was replete with body-conscious, curve loving fabulosity.

Curvy women are vivacious and sexy and we desire fashion choices that showcase our assets and maximize our curves. Frazier  is well known for having coined the expression “plus sexy” and her newest line of figure- forming, well cut silhouettes were just that.
