Shopping options just got a little better for curvy fashionistas in the Baltimore area. Arundel Mills which is one of the largest and premier destinations for discount shopping in Maryland welcomes Fashion to Figure and Torrid. Fashion to Figure a coveted brand offering up to the minute trends for plus-sized women will be opening in Neighborhood 1 this summer. Torrid which offers a complete range of plus-sized fashion as well as shoes, sleepwear and lingerie is slated to open in fall. I’m a huge fan of both brands and I’m excited to see the inclusion of more plus-sized offerings to the mall which offers a wide range of shopping options from Off Fifth (Saks outlet) to Forever 21.

For more information about Arundel Mills’ or for a complete list of retailers, call (410) 540-5100 or visit www.arundelmills.com. Arundel Mills also may be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ArundelMills) and on Twitter @ArundelMills.

Selfies, Pizza and Stars- Oscars Recap

Although the red carpet is typically the highlight of any awards, I dare say that Ellen Degeneres really stole the show in her role as host last night. Her comedic timing is always perfect but on oscar night it was even more so; between record breaking impromptu selfies, to making good on her promise to order pizza Ellen remained entertaining during a show that can sometimes be a snooze fest. She was funny, incredibly well dressed and was the primary reason I stayed tuned in- besides waiting to see Lupita win!!!!

Here are my top 8 moments from last nights Oscars:

8. Fashion moments I loved Pharrells trendsetting boldness opting to wear a Lanvin tuxedo that included shorts. Pharrell continues to make controversial fashion choices that keep us talking.

7. Best dressed- I also LOVED Charlize Theron in Dior, Kate Hudson in Versace and Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mischka

6. Speaking of Pharrell his performance of his academy nominated song “Happy” was another highlight. The choreography was on point and who can resist dancing along to such an infectious song? Plus he made his way to the audience and had several nominees dancing right along with him.

5. Judy Garland Tribute- Pink is usually incredibly edgy and prone to acrobatics during her performances; however I loved seeing her all dressed up delivering a powerful rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow

4.Pizza! In the middle of the formality of the academy awards Ellen Degeneres polls the audience on how hungry they are and then proceeds to have pizza delivered. Apparently it was gluten free.

3.Matthew McConaughey’ acceptance speech- I have admittedly not seen Dallas Buyers club but after his acceptance speech for wining for his lead actor role in the movie I’m definitely going to check it out. He was the only winner to thank God for his win-
“There’s a few things, about three things to my account that I need each day. One of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward to, and another is someone to chase. Now, first off, I want to thank God. ‘Cause that’s who I look up to. “He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand.”

2.Selfies! Ellen did an amazing job of infusing her authentic self into every moment as host. When she broke out her phone to take a selfie with several of the nominees she broke records for having the subsequent tweeted picture be retweeted over 2 million times.

1. Lupita Nyong’o wins! Lupita looked like a princess last night in her custom Prada and she served as inspiration to black girls everywhere-” may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

Cocktails and Couture New York Fashion Week Recap

This year Cocktail & Couture tried something a bit different, bringing a Personal Branding & Social Media panel into the mix to talk to up-and-coming bloggers on how to build their brand. Though I was anticipating the “turn up” I found myself learning some valuable information so heres the breakdown of the C&C branding portion.
The Panelist: Claire Sulmers – Freelance Fashion Writer and Creator/Editor of FashionBombDaily.com, Jennifer Walsh – Beauty Executive / Founder: The Beauty Bar, Behind The Brand Media, Jessica Goon – Senior Manager, Public Relations & Social Media, Avon & mark,Tracylee – Celebrity Manicurist and Sally Hansen Nail Ambassador, JasFly – Writer/Multimedia Personality, Charlene Dance - Global Marketing Director of Strength of Nature
5 Things I Learned:
Stay true to yourself: Being somebody else is doing a disservice to yourself and stops people from getting to know the real you
If your interested in working with a brand introduce yourself, cover them on your blog, and build a relationship
Be smart on social media
Own what makes you unique because brands are always looking for the next unique voice
Learn to say “no” if a project doesn’t represent your brand then don’t be afraid to pass it up. Only do things that you want to reflect your voice.

Fro Fashion Week Makes NYC Debut

For many, gaining entry into New York Fashion week is a huge mystery. As a result of this elusiveness, many alternatives to Fashion Week have sprouted up- Full Figured Fashion Week pays homage to the curvy fashionista with style and right across the bridge in Brooklyn ‘Fro Fashion Week made its NYC debut . The creator of Fro Fashion week- Tarin Boone developed the concept in order to celebrate the naturalista who essentially embraces her natural hair all while being impeccably turned out in the newest, latest, hottest.
The weekend boasted a series of seminars, pop-up shops and the marquee event was a fashion show which featured emerging designers.

Of course over the course of the week I will spend some time “at the tents” and look forward to the experience of having a first-hand look at the latest trends, snapping some real style and squealing with delight when I finally meet a blogger who’s style I’ve admired on Instagram. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time across the bridge at Fro Fashion Week with some of my natural tressed sisters delighting in the fact that I had an opportunity to attend a show where my unique beauty was reflected on the runway.

Curvy on the Carpet- Oscars Recap

The Oscars took place last night  and with the exception of a few highlights the show was a huge bore; In fact, I actually fell asleep in spite of my attempts to stay awake in order to see Adele perform what I now know is her Oscar winning song Skyfall.

Much will be written about how amazing Charlize Theron looked in Dior ( my best-dressed for the evening) or how Halle simply slayed in custom Versace- however, I wanted to show some love to the curvy girls who graced the red carpet last night.

If you have not figured it out by now, I’m a curvy girl who is constantly learning to embrace the figure God blessed me with- I applaud women in Hollywood who quite frankly are “average” sized but definitively find themselves in the  plus- sized category based on Hollywood ‘s standards. Here’s my Oscar rundown:

Octavia Spencer remained loyal to Tadashi Shoji in a nude-peach chiffon gown by the designer. I was not a fan of her look at all and after the actress recently  lost 20 pounds, I would have been happy to see her in something that highlighted her newly slimmed down figure; instead she wound up looking quite matronly in a dress that would have been perfect for the mother of the bride.

Melissa McCarthy
Let me start by saying I love this woman- she has pitch-perfect comedic timing and is currently starring in one of the top box office hits-Identity Theft. Unfortunately she entrusted her red carpet look to someone who simply has no clue how to dress a fuller figured woman. Everything about last nights look was wrong- from the ill-fitting gown to hair that reminded me of the old school cast of Dallas.85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Queen Latifah
I only happened to  catch a glimpse of Lah on the carpet but let me tell you, she always looks amazing- she was resplendent in Bagdley Mischka and everything from her elegant pony tail to her flawless make up was completely swoon-worthy.

Adele is my new girl crush and she was hands down my favorite on the red carpet last night- although I would have loved to have seen her in something other than her staple black she looked incredibly gorgeous in Jenny Packham. Part of the reason I loved her look is because she chose something that accentuated her assets and minimized any flaws.

NYFW- Maatano A/W 2013 Food and Fashion!

Let’s skip this winter and fast forward straight to fall which is going to be amazingly dark,  laid back  and regal all at the same time. With tons of texture, gold and prints that keep you mesmerized Mataano served fall on a platter that made you want to devour each piece. The collection channeled Janet Jackson circa 1997 patent leather, cheetah print and it was rich with color.

Speaking of platter as part of the festivities Chef Roble was the master of eats serving a plethora of appetizers that made me want to slap your mother. Chicken, portobello mushroom , succulent steak, mixed greens and tortellini rounded out the menu.

Come fall, I can see I will  need some leather of all types in my wardrobe, and what about that makeup winged liner and those vamp lips ladies get ready for the fall it’s going to be dark and lovely.

New York Fashion Week Mathieu Mirano Recap

Mathieu Mirano’s Spring 2013 collection hit multiple ends of the spectrum of fashion from ready to wear to editorial. A navy chevron hem coat, navy leather shirt and Mikado trouser with calfskin embossed heels could have walked right out from tents and would have been attacked by street style photographers.

Great separates that came in a variety of material and a range of colors from an orange pleated leather jacket to red knit dress in red were wearable pieces that made attendees want to commence spring shopping now. The white sequined cape with multi-rainbow yoke featured in the collection was perfect for a W Magazine editorial and a green chiffon beetle gown that needs a red carpet moment.

Fashion’s Night Out, Thursday, September 6th

Fashionista’s, editors and buyers from across the globe are all prepping for New York Fashion Week. From thoughtful wardrobe selections to finding the perfect shoes that will offer equal parts form and function, there is a tremendous amount of preparation that goes into attending NYFW. Though I am excited about all of the events that surround the premier fashion event of the season, I am probably more excited about Fashion’s Night Out!  There is so much going on across the country that it’s enough to make your head swim.   I have made participating in NY’s Fashion Night an annual tradition that I participate in with some of my nearest and dearest friends and this year is no exception.  Fashion’s Night Out takes place nationwide on Thursday, September 6th.

Here’s a complete list of Fashion Night Out events  http://fashionsnightout.com/fno

And of course my hometown will be hosting Baltimore Fashion’s Night out and one of my favorite hand bag companies the Purse Paparazzi is a vendor the evening.
