NYFW-Backstage with Design Essentials At Harlem Fashion Row

Halo braids

Design Essentials served as the official hair sponsor for Harlem Fashion Row. Keith Campbell returned as Lead stylist for the show and he created looks from highly textured, voluminous pompadours to halo braids and textured Afros.

Though each designer had individual styles that served as the hair inspiration for their respective collections Design Essentials provided products from both their natural line and the professional salon range.

The pompadour created for Byron Lars was a huge favorite both backstage and among the fashionistas attending the show.

NYFW-Backstage At Victor dE Souza with Mizani

Backstage at Victor dE Souza

Backstage at Victor dE Souza

Master Mizani Stylist Ceaser Ramirez was tapped to create looks for the Victor dE Souza Spring 2015 Collection and the textured hair was very reminiscent of 80s disco chic. The arctic- icy blonde tresses were the perfect exclamation to accentuate the beautifully cut satins and silks in the collection.

“I wanted to design a dimensional style in this icy, arctic shade for a dramatic look,” says Ramirez. “Using MIZANI products to create the bold, textured style was a perfect match, as the brand has always been a leader in the professional textured market. I loved having the opportunity to work with Victor because he brings drama and his pieces are incredibly theatrical, so it really inspires my creativity.”

Ramirez used the following Mizani products in order to create what he describes as an “A-line bob”:

First the entire head was coated with
Mizani Iron Curl Heat Styling cream and the hair was braided all over in a figure 8 pattern; once the pins were secure, the hair was sealed with the humidity resistant mist and touched briefly with a flat iron.

Finally the hair was taken down and teased to create textured voluminous bob.

When Life Gives You Curves- You Rock Them-Curves Rock Weekend Recap

This weekend the Hyatt Hotel played host to the third annual Curves Rock Weekend. The weekend kicked off with a runway competition hosted at Oxygen Lounge and continued with a mix of panel discussions, a sample sale and a showcase of emerging designers. The highlight of the weekend is always the runway show which featured a mix of designers for the traditionally under served curvy girl.
One of my new local favorites who I initially discovered via Instagram @Mimidre of Fly Nerd was featured both as an emerging designer and in Saturday evenings runway show.

Tionna Smalls returned with her own brand of curvy, plus-positive humor keeping the attendees not only laughing but continuously reminding everyone about just how awesome it is to be curvy.

Ms. Maryland Plus delighted us with her talents and personally brought me to tears with her spoken word which was equal parts poignant, impactful and encouraging.

Selfies, Pizza and Stars- Oscars Recap

Although the red carpet is typically the highlight of any awards, I dare say that Ellen Degeneres really stole the show in her role as host last night. Her comedic timing is always perfect but on oscar night it was even more so; between record breaking impromptu selfies, to making good on her promise to order pizza Ellen remained entertaining during a show that can sometimes be a snooze fest. She was funny, incredibly well dressed and was the primary reason I stayed tuned in- besides waiting to see Lupita win!!!!

Here are my top 8 moments from last nights Oscars:

8. Fashion moments I loved Pharrells trendsetting boldness opting to wear a Lanvin tuxedo that included shorts. Pharrell continues to make controversial fashion choices that keep us talking.

7. Best dressed- I also LOVED Charlize Theron in Dior, Kate Hudson in Versace and Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mischka

6. Speaking of Pharrell his performance of his academy nominated song “Happy” was another highlight. The choreography was on point and who can resist dancing along to such an infectious song? Plus he made his way to the audience and had several nominees dancing right along with him.

5. Judy Garland Tribute- Pink is usually incredibly edgy and prone to acrobatics during her performances; however I loved seeing her all dressed up delivering a powerful rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow

4.Pizza! In the middle of the formality of the academy awards Ellen Degeneres polls the audience on how hungry they are and then proceeds to have pizza delivered. Apparently it was gluten free.

3.Matthew McConaughey’ acceptance speech- I have admittedly not seen Dallas Buyers club but after his acceptance speech for wining for his lead actor role in the movie I’m definitely going to check it out. He was the only winner to thank God for his win-
“There’s a few things, about three things to my account that I need each day. One of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward to, and another is someone to chase. Now, first off, I want to thank God. ‘Cause that’s who I look up to. “He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand.”

2.Selfies! Ellen did an amazing job of infusing her authentic self into every moment as host. When she broke out her phone to take a selfie with several of the nominees she broke records for having the subsequent tweeted picture be retweeted over 2 million times.

1. Lupita Nyong’o wins! Lupita looked like a princess last night in her custom Prada and she served as inspiration to black girls everywhere-” may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

56th Annual Grammy’s Recap

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards took place last night and if you watched while engaged in social media the general consensus across Facebook and Twitter was the show was rather boring; the highlights for me included Mr. And Mrs. Carter AKA Beyonce and Jay-Z opening the show with a performance of Drunk In Love the hit from Beyonce’s self-titled album. Kendrick Lamar’s performance with Imagine Dragons resulted in me joining Lamar’s fan club- seriously, color me a HUGE Kendrick fan. Other highlights included Daft Punks performance with Pharell Williams, Stevie Wonder and Nile Rogers and a rather confusing wedding officiated by the gorgeous Queen Latifah.

As usual, the real focus of any award show is always the red carpet and here are my favorite looks from the evening:

Rita Ora was in an iridescent cocktail length dress by Lanvin. I loved the bombshell-esque waves of her hair, the bodycon fit of her dress and her makeup, were all just pitch perfect.

Tamar Braxton
I’m a huge fan of Tamar’s music, however her fashion choices always ring inauthentic to me. Last night she found her voice wearing crimson Michael Costello.

Taylor Swift wore a chain link Gucci gown and was simply stunning in a gown that quite possibly could be my favorite look of the evening.

Beyonce also opted for a Michael Costello gown which definitely demonstrated her alter-ego “Yonce” is here to stay.

Cocktails and Couture New York Fashion Week Recap

This year Cocktail & Couture tried something a bit different, bringing a Personal Branding & Social Media panel into the mix to talk to up-and-coming bloggers on how to build their brand. Though I was anticipating the “turn up” I found myself learning some valuable information so heres the breakdown of the C&C branding portion.
The Panelist: Claire Sulmers – Freelance Fashion Writer and Creator/Editor of FashionBombDaily.com, Jennifer Walsh – Beauty Executive / Founder: The Beauty Bar, Behind The Brand Media, Jessica Goon – Senior Manager, Public Relations & Social Media, Avon & mark,Tracylee – Celebrity Manicurist and Sally Hansen Nail Ambassador, JasFly – Writer/Multimedia Personality, Charlene Dance - Global Marketing Director of Strength of Nature
5 Things I Learned:
Stay true to yourself: Being somebody else is doing a disservice to yourself and stops people from getting to know the real you
If your interested in working with a brand introduce yourself, cover them on your blog, and build a relationship
Be smart on social media
Own what makes you unique because brands are always looking for the next unique voice
Learn to say “no” if a project doesn’t represent your brand then don’t be afraid to pass it up. Only do things that you want to reflect your voice.

Fro Fashion Week Makes NYC Debut

For many, gaining entry into New York Fashion week is a huge mystery. As a result of this elusiveness, many alternatives to Fashion Week have sprouted up- Full Figured Fashion Week pays homage to the curvy fashionista with style and right across the bridge in Brooklyn ‘Fro Fashion Week made its NYC debut . The creator of Fro Fashion week- Tarin Boone developed the concept in order to celebrate the naturalista who essentially embraces her natural hair all while being impeccably turned out in the newest, latest, hottest.
The weekend boasted a series of seminars, pop-up shops and the marquee event was a fashion show which featured emerging designers.

Of course over the course of the week I will spend some time “at the tents” and look forward to the experience of having a first-hand look at the latest trends, snapping some real style and squealing with delight when I finally meet a blogger who’s style I’ve admired on Instagram. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time across the bridge at Fro Fashion Week with some of my natural tressed sisters delighting in the fact that I had an opportunity to attend a show where my unique beauty was reflected on the runway.
