Desiree Rogers lands new gig as CEO of Johnson Publishing

Desiree Rogers, the former White House social secretary has landed on her feet just fine as CEO of the Johnson Publishing Company. As CEO, Rogers will be accountable for the day to day operations of the company. Johnson publishing is the powerhouse behind longtime African-American favorite magazines Ebony and Jet. I personally think this a huge win for all involved. I am looking forward to seeing the changes that will happen particularly at Jet, as I have long thought the magazine was due for an overhaul.

First Lady Gives Inauguration Gown to Smithsonian

by Lisa
First Lady Michelle Obama donated her inauguration gown to the Smithsonian during a traditional ceremony which includes the donation of ‘debut” dresses to the museum.

The iconic Jason Wu design will be showcased in a new gallery called “First Lady Debut” along with inaugural gowns worn by other First Ladies.

The Divine Mrs. O said of her dress “When I look at my gown — which I, in fact, have not seen since the day that I took it off — memories of that moment truly come rushing back. I remember that it was freezing cold in Washington. I know we all remember that. Yet, despite the frigid temperatures, hundreds of thousands of people flooded the Mall. Nothing was going to stop them from being part of history”.

Ebony Fashion Fair- its a wrap??

Ebony Fashion Fair is recognized as one of the largest touring fashion shows featuring black women. The show which is the brainchild of Eunice Johnson, wife to the Ebony publishing king- John Johnson have been placed on hold following the January death of Johnson.

In spite of the fact that major publications including Vogue Black have finally recognized the power of black beauty, the indefinite hiatus of the Ebony Fashion Fair shows will surely create a gap in this chapter of black fashion history.

Bethann Hardison takes over the Reins at Vogue Black

by Lisa

The GF reported last week that Vogue Black was launching simultaneously with Vogue Curvy; publications which will tap into two demographics that have been largely been ignored by the fashion industry.

Well in related news, Essesnce.com has just announced that Bethann Hardison will take over the reins as Editor-at-large of Vogue Black… Is Vogue Black a step in the right direction? I guess the upcoming months will tell, however I honestly believe Vogue Black/ Vogue Curvy are long overdue.

Solange Says Yes!

Research has shown that approximately 3000 youth between the ages of 15-24 are affected daily with HIV. The sad fact is the GF has seen more billboards advertising drug cocktails for HIV treatment, versus prevention.

On Tuesday, April 14th, singer/songwriter Solange Knowles, alongside The Body Shop and MTV Networks International, kicked off the global launch of their new HIV/Aids safe sex campaign, Yes, Yes Yes to Safe Sex!

The Body Shop Tantalizing Lip Butter,(which retails for $8) will give approximately $5 from every purchase to the Staying Alive Foundation, which funds grassroots safe sex campaigns around the world.

The beautiful and inspirational Michelle Obama will grace the March cover of Vogue magazine. Andre Leon Talley, practically gushed at just how fabulous Mrs. O was to work with for the shoot when he was interviewed on the Today Show.

The magazine will hit stands in NYC and LA on February 17th and will be widely available on (or around) February 24th.
