Curves Rock Weekend- Runway Recap

If you haven’t had the pleasure of spending any amount of time watching Tionna Smalls of MTV fame – truly get to know her. Smalls was one of the delightful hosts of Curves Rock Weekend which is the premier full figured fashion week for the Baltimore/DC metro area. Hosting duties were shared by Baltimore’s own super-model Liris Crosse who also serves as one of the business partners behind the weekend.

Curves Rock consisted of a host of seminars with a focus on empowering women; however the marquee event was the runway show which featured eight designers and a bevy of some of the most gorgeous plus-sized models I’ve ever laid eyes on. The brain child of former models- Tykesha “Ms Diva Doll” Reed and Chanell “Stallion N’ Stilettos” Jones this was only the second year for an event that bought women from as far away as San Diego.

Here are some of the highlights from the show which included designs from Torrid, Ashley Stewart, Anne Kaufman, Marco Hall and Shanda Freeman.

The vendors were another highlight for the weekend and one my hands down favorites was which celebrate the thickness of curvy women.

New Jersey Full Figured Fashion Week- Recap

Atlantic City played host to some of the most fabulous curvy fashionistas as Bally’s Resort and Casino rolled out the red carpet for New Jersey Full Figured Fashion week. The weekend, which was organized by Nfinite form, was replete with celebs, great entertainment and awesome shopping.

There were several highlights over the course of the weekend however, Toccara Jones of Americas Next Top Model fame was definitely one of my favorites. She was equal parts funny and incredibly transparent about her journey to becoming one of the top plus models in the country.  She spoke of her perseverance as her desire to become a model was ignited at the tender age of 14. She graciously addressed questions from the audience and it was truly a pleasure to see that the persona she portrays on television is very much who she is in “real life”.

Other highlights included a concert featuring Eric Benet and Melanie Fiona ( the girl can BLOW), and  the exhibit hall, which offered the ultimate sip and shop experience for curvy girls.  My favorite vendors were conversation piece and- I truly adored the pin up girls earrings which were such a huge hit, I have to order mine as they sold out.

I am still learning to love my curves

The love affair of a curvy girl in a tiny world is one that is constantly waxing and waning and I am still learning to love my curves. I believe my apprehension about being “luxury-sized” started back as early as the fourth grade where I can remember being both taller and far more “developed’ than any of my peers.  The same curves that bought attention (mostly unwanted) from the boys in my class made it very difficult to forge any friendships with my female classmates. Quite simply, I was a brick house and I was only in the fourth grade.  I was ostracized for having the body that other people wanted never mind that I could rarely wear the latest fashion because the clothes simply did not fit. My initial wardrobe challenges at a very early age are when the fashionista in me was first born.  More often than not I couldn’t wear trendy clothing because I was so curvy so instead of following the trends I learned to make my own.   I developed an affinity for skirts and dresses and at the tender age of 8 because I already had difficulty finding jeans for my already womanly hips and dresses were an easier option to wear.

I come from a long line of women who are unabashedly curvy. My mother in her younger years was frequently asked to be a plus-sized model and it was ultimately through her own love of self and the never ending compliments she received for being so well-dressed that I began to become comfortable in my own curvy body.  Admittedly I still dread the idea of going into the dressing room to try on jeans and a swimsuit but doesn’t every woman?   I recognize the importance of my own unique beauty and in spite of the fact that I am not a size 2 I can still be chic, stylish and an authentic fashionista!

In less than 24 hours, I will head to South Beach where the swim suits will be tiny, the people will be beautiful and the partying will be endless. I will proudly don my bathing suit in the midst of women who are likely half my size- I will be bold, head turning, and authentically me.

Here’s a sneak peek into my curvy girl friendly beach options…

Queen Latifah Launches Line for HSN

There is rarely anything that happens that qualifies as being ground breaking in curvy fashion. Surely there are a few great brands that curvy girls can turn to with confidence but many of us luxury-sized women wait with a lukewarm interest when “new” collections are released to address our needs.

Well, hopefully the tides are changing as one of my curvy icons- Queen Latifah has developed a collection for women ranging from size 2-24 in partnership with HSN. The range will be available on the shopping network on August 27th.

Monif C- New Boutique Open!

Monif C has long since been a favorite of curvy fashionistas everywhere. Her convertible Marilyn dress has reached iconic levels with its flattering shape and multiple ways to wear it this dress is a must! Well in celebration of her 5 years of fabulousness, including being named “Best Plus Size boutique” by City Search Monif C has relocated to new digs- the new boutique features the Marilyn dress as well as sophisticated and chic pieces for sizes 12-24 and a range of footwear in sizes 9-13.

I am absolutely in love with this new collection because the designer recognizes that curves should be embraced and celebrated and women who wear extended sizes want to be sexy and chic.

Here are some of my favorites from the fall collection:

Plus-Sized Fashion during NY Fashion Week?

photo:Vogue Italia

Unless you have been living under a very unfashionable rock, you know that NY Fashion Week kicks off this week and technically started with a huge public fashion show to commemorate Fashion’s Night Out at the Lincoln Center. While many people are just beginning to scan their September Issues trying to determine what’s hot for fall, fashion insiders will be heading to the Lincoln Center and other destinations across New York City to find out what will be on trend for spring 2011.

One of the shows that I am most excited about is the One Stop Plus fashion show which focuses on women with curves. The average woman is a size 14 and finally the fashion world is taking notice by hosting the premiere plus size fashion show during the coveted New York Fashion Week. Tocarra who rose to fame during her stint on America’s Next Top Model will rip the runway and the red carpet will be hosted by Emme.

The show will take place on September 15th at the Center for Jazz at The Lincoln Center.
